'Every Day': Behind the Scenes of YA Romance About Falling for a Disembodied Soul (Exclusive)

By

We've seen vampires fall in love. We've seen werewolves and wizards and zombies, too, but the latest love story making the leap from YA to the big screen, Every Day, is about a 16-year-old girl (played by Angourie Rice) who falls for a wandering soul that inhabits a different host body every day. In this exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette, the cast and crew reveal exactly how it all works.

"The next day is transgender, black, Asian, gay, straight-- All these different manifestations of what a person can be," director Michael Sucsy explains. Author David Levithan adds, "This is a person who has never been defined by a physical body, by gender, by race, by class, by parents' DNA."

To achieve the movie's "special effect" -- that is, casting 20 different actors to play the different incarnations of the soul, called A -- Every Day enlisted up-and-coming talents like Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Owen Teague (It) and Rice's Spider-Man: Homecoming co-star, Jacob Batalon, among others.

Here is the movie's official synopsis:

"Based on David Levithan’s acclaimed New York Times bestseller, EVERY DAY tells the story of Rhiannon (Rice), a 16-year old girl who falls in love with a mysterious soul named 'A' who inhabits a different body every day. Feeling an unmatched connection, Rhiannon and A work each day to find each other, not knowing what or who the next day will bring. The more the two fall in love, the more the realities of loving someone who is a different person every 24 hours takes a toll, leaving Rhiannon and 'A' to face the hardest decision either has ever had to make."

Every Day opens in theaters on Feb. 23.
